Ammonia poisoning is caused by an aquarium that has not been cycled, overstocked fish and not enough water changes.
Avoid adding too many fish to your aquarium at one time, complete your aquarium's nitrogen cycle before adding fish and do a weekly water change of 20%.
- Red or inflamed gills
- Gasping for air at the surface
- Too many fish
- "New tank syndrome"
- In emergencies, 50% water changes will help
- Using chemicals such as Seachem's "Prime" will reduce ammonia and nitrites immediately. Use as directed.
