Dropsy or Malawi Bloat


Cause :
A bacterial infection of the kidneys, which causes fluid to accumulate and cause renal failure. This disease is thought to be opportunistic with weakened fish living in bad water conditions.

Prevention :
Maintain healthy water quality. Use 1 TBSP of salt per gallon in a freshwater aquarium.

Symptoms :

  • Bloating
  • Protruding Scales

Treatment :

  • Remove and carbon filters
  • Turn off UV sterilizers
  • Add external medication as directed (Antibiotics or a broad spectrum, non-antibiotic such as Tetra Lifeguard®.
  • Antibiotic injections or food are the most effective
  • A broad spectrum fungus treatment may also be effective
