Gravel is the most common aquarium substrate in the aquarium industry due to the fact that it is cheap, functional and can be colored any way you would like. Gravel has pros and cons as every other substrate does. Here is a list of pros and  cons of what you can expect from your gravel substrate.

Gravel Pros :

  • Cost effective
  • Very easy to clean
  • PH usually is not usually affected

Gravel Cons :

  • Larger gravel can store waste in between granules
  • Gravel is too large for some fish to be comfortable
  • No beneficial nutrients for planted aquariums
  • Fish are unable to burrow
  • Difficult to grow plants
  • Provides no nutrients
